Mtskheta
Mtskheta is one of the oldest & mysterious towns in the world founded in the middle of the 1st millennium B. C. It is the former capital of Georgia, and one of the most visited place throughout the years. It was the first town to adopt Christianity in 4th Century. Its nickname is “The Second Jerusalem” that makes it more attractive because of its holy places. The whole town is under UNESCO cover from 1994.
The first place we’ll visit is Jvari Monastery, built on the top of the cliff, overlooking the confluence of two Rivers and Mtskheta holy town. The word Jvari means “cross” and refers to the large wooden cross erected after spreading Christianity in this region. It gives you an amazing 360° degrees view panoramic view over Mtskheta and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Confluence of rivers, Zedazeni mountain and Tbilisi.
The second highlight of the tour is Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which is one of the most significant pieces of Christian architecture, mentioned in numerous historical books and literature. The first cathedral was built in 4th century and according to the legend the robe of Jesus Christ is buried under the church.
After visiting UNESCO heritage sites, you’ll have free time to enjoy the local market atmosphere in Mtskheta. You’ll have chance to buy some souvenirs, species, Georgian National Candies called Churchkhela. Do not leave Mtskheta without trying Wine Ice-cream and some local pastries.
